My journey back to Catholicism started with the Emmaus retreat I participated in almost a year ago. The retreat is based on Luke 24:13-35 which describes two disciples of Christ walking toward the town of Emmaus, despondent over the recent crucifixion and apparent death of Jesus, whom they thought was the messiah.
They encounter a stranger on the road who asks them what’s wrong. The disciples proceed to tell him all that has passed. The stranger listens then shares scripture and wisdom with them. When it’s time to part ways, the disciples ask the stranger to come and have a meal with them since it’s late. He does.
When the stranger breaks the bread at the meal, the disciples’ eyes are suddenly opened. They realize they have been with the resurrected Jesus all along.
They understood that Jesus was the Christ who overcame death. If death was not the end, then what was there to fear in this life?
This was my experience at the retreat. Jesus has been walking alongside me throughout my life, trying to show me the truth in many ways. But I couldn’t see him because I was too busy looking at the world’s definition of truth.
Once my eyes were opened, I understood that the crucifixion and resurrection, once embraced, has the power to transform me and the character of all humanity forever.
Day by day, I walk the road back…to Christ.
