Each of us views life through the lens of our unique experiences, shaping how we interpret reality. Psychologists call this our “worldview,” which profoundly influences how we see others and ourselves.
What if we could see the world differently—through eyes filled with grace, love, and hope instead of fear or judgment?
Unfortunately, we don’t see the world as it is—we see it as we are.
When fear rules our hearts, the world feels heavy and threatening. But when love takes the lead, everything shifts—the world feels brighter, more hopeful, and filled with possibility.
Lately, I’ve felt an inner nudge to step beyond my limited perspective and see things as God does with eyes wide open to love and truth.
What Does It Mean to “See As God Sees?”
Fr. Dave Pivonka, a Franciscan who inspires people to deepen their connection with the Holy Spirit, calls wisdom—the ability to “see as God sees”—a priceless gift from the Holy Spirit. Wisdom allowed Mother Teresa to look at those suffering in poverty and see Christ in them. Wisdom helps us shift from merely getting through life to living it with purpose and love.
God sees the world through the lens of love because God is love (1 John 4:8). Unlike human love, which can be conditional or self-serving, God’s love is pure, selfless, and limitless.
Imagine what it would be like to see the world through those eyes.
Love Changes Everything
When I reflect on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, I start to see a glimpse of how love could transform my perspective:
“Love is patient and kind. It is not envious, boastful, arrogant, or rude. It does not insist on its own way. It is not irritable or resentful.”
What if I could see others with more patience and kindness? I might better understand their struggles and my own. Instead of reacting with judgment or frustration, I could respond with gentleness and curiosity, inviting growth without pressure or timelines.
I might begin to see past people’s flaws and focus on the pain or fear that often lies beneath their actions. I could extend to them and myself the same grace God freely gives.
It’s a lofty goal, I know. But imagine how even a tiny shift toward this kind of love could transform our relationships, choices, and experiences of the world.
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
Through the eyes of love, I would see not just the brokenness in the world but also the beauty that can emerge when we allow God to heal us. I’d recognize that no mistake or hardship is beyond God’s ability to redeem.
A Daily Invitation
Without the wisdom of love, life can feel overwhelmingly dark. But with God’s perspective, I can trust He is present even in the most challenging moments. As I grow in the gift of wisdom, its easier to extend God’s love to others, one small act of patience, kindness, or understanding at a time.
When I pray for wisdom, I ask for the ability to see the world as God sees it.
A Prayer for Wisdom
Come, Holy Spirit. Open my heart and help me recognize and act on the gift of wisdom You gave me at Baptism. Teach me to see as Jesus saw, to think as He did and to love as he loved. May love shape my thoughts and actions, bringing peace and healing to me and those I encounter. Amen.
Today, would you consider asking the Holy Spirit to help you see with God’s eyes starting with just one person or one situation? If it doesn’t make you feel just a little bit better, you can always go back to your old way of seeing things.
My guess is you might not want to. Because love never fails.
