When people think of the Bible, its stories, and its talk about sin, it can all seem far removed from the everyday grind. It is easy to see why someone might ask, “Why does Jesus even matter today?”
After all, most people are not waking up in the morning thinking about sin or salvation. They’re thinking about paying bills, managing stress, navigating relationships, and trying to hold themselves together in a world that feels noisy, divided, and uncertain.
Yet, behind all the pressures we face every day, there’s a deeper problem we don’t often see until life brings us face to face with it: the constant assault of fear and doubt that shapes how we think, what we say, and what we do.
No matter how much we get our lives together on the “outside,” no external success or pleasure can overcome a heart that is regretful about the past, anxious about the future, and questioning its own worthiness.
Only Jesus can. Let me show you why.
Imagine you’re at the mall, shopping, eating ice cream, just enjoying an ordinary afternoon. You’re minding your own business, not hurting anyone. Then suddenly you hear it. Pop, pop, pop. Panic erupts. A shooter is firing randomly, and before you can even process what is happening, you realize the weapon is pointed directly at you.
You freeze.
And then, out of nowhere, a stranger jumps in front of you and takes the bullet meant for you. You live. He dies. The threat to your life is averted.
Now ask yourself three questions.
First, did you need to be saved?
Second, how would you feel about the person who saved your life? Could you ever forget them or stop being grateful for that kind of sacrifice?
Third, how would you feel about your worthiness now? If someone was willing to give up their life for you, what would that say about your value?
2,000 years ago, Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He stepped into the line of fire, protecting us from everything that blinds us to the unbounded love of God. Through the radical humility and forgiveness of His life, death, and resurrection, He rendered powerless the anger, pride, envy, resentment, shame, and every other sin that harden our hearts and distort our perceptions.
Jesus didn’t stand off at a safe distance, giving us a few commandments and wishing us well. Rather, He entered into the danger and brokenness people lived with every day at great cost.
And for those who believe in Him, He still does.
Jesus matters for our lives. Because we are still being targeted by a darkness that intrudes on our lives, seeking to extinguish hope and replace it with despair.
Jesus wants to step in between you and what would damage your delicate soul. He wants to reveal your worthiness through His greatest act of love. A love that still wants to reach you today, reassuring you that you’re not defined by your circumstances, past, or failures.
Instead, your true identity is determined by what God was willing to do for you through His Son. You are a person deeply loved by and cared for by God, your creator.
In a world full of anxiety, confusion, temptation, and division, Jesus is not outdated.
On the contrary, He’s the answer to the deepest ache of the human heart. He wants to rush to your side, meet you in our scariest, loneliest, most grief-filled, and confusing moments. He’s ready to offer you His strength and mercy for a brand-new understanding of who you are and how much you are loved.
Try opening your mind and heart to Jesus. Learn about Him. Discover the transformative impact He can have on your life today. If you do, it’ll be hard not to love Him, trust Him, and eventually, follow Him.
As it was, is, and will ever be…Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life for whoever wants to truly know Him.
